As a woodworker I find I am constantly struggling to use all of the wood I bring into my shop. After every project there are always scrap wood pieces too small to use in an efficient manner that would justify my time. End grain cutting boards are the perfect solution to the scrap wood dilemma. This particular board is made up of a number of different woods both exotic and domestic.
I call this particular type of chopping board Semi chaotic, because there is a certain chaos to the size and orientation of the end grain pieces and yet upon close inspection you will see a repeating pattern. The chaotic way in which the wood pieces are put together ensures that no two boards are alike making them truly one of a kind, both functional and attractive.
ADVANTAGES OF END GRAIN CUTTING BOARDS
End grain cutting boards tend to be more expensive than face grain cutting boards as there is more labour involved in making them. However, they are arguably superior in quality as they are much easier on knives as their more fibrous nature allows the knife to sink into the wood fibers while you are cutting, keeping your knives sharper longer. Furthermore, end grain boards have a self healing factor as the fibers close up after they have been cut by the knife, leaving the board free of blemishes
My boards are finished with a food safe mineral oil, followed by a bee’s wax rub and affixed with non staining non marring bumper feet screwed onto their bottom surface. The feet allow the board to be easily picked up and prevent it from damaging whatever surface it is put on.
This particular board measures approximately:
Width = 6 inches,
